Human rights and peace and justice groups are organizing a march and rally starting at the Old Town Plaza on Saturday, January 10th, 12:00-2:00 pm, as part of a national day of protest
to the escalating U.S/Israeli War against the Gaza Strip. The march
will begin at the Old Town Plaza and culminate in a rally in front of
the Lockheed Martin Extreme Screen(TM) Dynamax Theater.
Lockheed Martin manufactures the F-16s that are used in the Israeli
airstrikes against the Palestinian people. Without U.S complicity these
atrocities committed against the Palestinian people would not be
possible.
Since the beginning of the attack, more than 640 Palestinians have been
killed and many more injured (2,700). Many of those are women and
children. The population of the Gaza Strip had already been severely
affected by a week of air-strikes and the 18-month long closure of the
territory imposed by Israel. The latest ground military operation
further compounds this humanitarian crisis.
There is now an increased threat to civilians due to combat in densely
populated urban areas. Hospitals continue to be overstretched by the
large number of casualties that have been accumulating since 27
December. Ambulances and medical staff face serious difficulties in
accessing victims of the fighting. Electricity and telecommunications
are non-functional in much of the Strip.
Tuesday, the Israeli Army shelled a UN school that inhabited 600
civilians who had to evacuate their homes in north Gaza; at least 42
people were killed.
John Ging, the top UN official in Gaza stated,"There is nowhere safe in
Gaza. Everyone here is terrorized and traumatized". Ging calls upon the
international community to apply pressure on Israel for an immediate
cease fire."I am appealing to political leaders here and in the region
and the world to get their act together and stop this. . .They are
responsible for these deaths."
Prof. Richard Falk, the UN
Special Rapporteur for Human Rights in the Occupied Palestinian
Territory and international law expert at Princeton University,
described Israel's siege of Gaza last year as a crime against humanity.
